I spent over a year cleaning up a 1969 Mexican mini-comic adaptation of Poe's "HOUSE OF USHER". That version, the only one I've found based on Richard Matheson's 1960 screenplay, had two major additions to it. The house was haunted by real ghosts, and Madelina had gone home to attend her sister's funeral. Her sister left behind a young son, Kent, who was desperate to get away from the insanity of his Uncle Rodrigo.
In one poignant scene, Kent says to Fernando, "If you take me, I will love you as my father. I will love you a lot." Somehow, that one innocuous line inspired this tender scenario.
More as I go!
