COLEY, Part 2

(Continued from Part 1)

Following "BREATHLESS", John Blackburn did a sequel which brought his bixesual hero back to the island where he gained his voodoo power. Like the 3 previous books, this was a self-published limited-edition book. However, unlike the others, this was was reprinted a year later by Eros Comix.  I just still can't figure the thinking of skipping the earlier books, since it meant that the first several pages of the new story was over-loaded with exposition to try and bring readers up to date on what they missed.

RETURN TO VOODO ISLAND   (Limited Edition  /  1991)
My first view of John Blackburn's work-- and Coley!
Beautiful use of color. I'm still trying to figure out what he used here-- acrylic, guache, water color, colored pencils?

RETURN FROM VOODOO ISLAND  1  (April 1992)
Heavy exposition!

It took me a few years before I was able to read the story with the events being described in this scene.
RETURN FROM VOODOO ISLAND  2   (July 1992)
Gorgeous!

Kit, a close friend of Coley's since the opening scenes in "BREATHLESS", found herself disturbed by the wildness and violent situations that Coley seemed to surround himself with, and told him she intended to leave and never see him again.  He begged her to stay just one more night, during which he performed an intense voodoo ritual as she watched.  As a result, she found herself unable to leave, though she knew she could never change him, nor did she want to.
I somehow missed the 2nd Erox mini. As a result, when I ordered it from the publisher, I was initially confused as to the reading order, as certain story elements in it seemed very similar to those described in flashback at the beginning of "RETURN TO VOODOO ISLAND". I've speculated that Blackburn may have done this (consciously or not) for readers who had not been able to read the earlier story.  Both "BREATHLESS" and "IDOL OF FLESH" have climaxes that involve a violent sacrifice ritual straight out of a horror movie, although the latter actually does involve supernatural elements which seem to pay tribute to the works of H.P. Lovecraft!

IDOL OF FLESH  1   (March 1993)
HHHHOT!

IDOL OF FLESH  2   (April 1993)
REALLY HHHHOT!

A panel from near the end of the story.
